Who is your favorite historical figure?
There are so many people whose faith has encouraged me through and through and though their circumstances were far from ideal they maintained a firm belief in God. I can learn a thing or two from them.
Take Paul for example: he went from being a fierce opponent against believers to being one of the boldly convinced voices of the faith. His faith shook not just him to change but his impact was also felt by so many people, he didn’t just believe, he ended up being a teacher of the word.
One of the best stories to me: is when Paul was busy preaching to a crowd on the top of a building and in my head I picture it like a movie. Acts 20: 7-12
Paul is deep into teaching: dropping some profound stuff, the people are intently listening, soaking it in but for this one guy this has been going on for a WHILE, he’s been fighting sleep, so he finds himself dozing off, and ends up fully knocked out. Problem is; he is sitting by the window, that’s when, mid sermon, dude just falls and dies.
BUT not to panic, Paul knows a guy! This kind of thing is His specialty so he heads and prays for him and God raised him back to life.
What I’ve come to learn is this: being a believer does not call us to perfection and for the longest time, I missed that message, we are called to progressive growth. That progressive growth produces impactful faith so that our lives can be just as impactful as Paul’s.
Perfection is attained eventually, but it’s found in constant union with Christ! So when we are learning from historical figures it helps to remember that they were human and may have fallen short but their connection with God is what made them righteous.
Many others like Joseph, Peter, Elijah, Elisha had beautiful transformational journeys of faith. Their journeys are just as impactful.
